Sun Style Tai Chi Signature moves Onassis Parungao World Tai Chi Day 2024
In this video I intended to go over most of the Signature moves (ideas) we find in the Sun Form. It was near the end of the day however and I just ran out of time. Too bad!
Again many thanks to Shirley Ha Chock.

    Your background in combat sports makes you the most interesting martial arts instructor on youtube. No lie. So many people move from TMA/CMA to MMA and other combat sports, but you're one of the very few to go the other way.

    • @Rainbow_Oracle
      @Rainbow_Oracle 14 днів тому

      It's not that strange. All you need is an actually good teacher! Besides, most people beat themselves up doing MMA and retire to TMA when their body can't handle it anymore. People only drop TMA when they have a bad teacher, or they don't get enough live practice, or the environment is too laidback or the ruleset too restrictive. It's also pretty normal for a teacher to take a successful practitioner of "dumb" martial arts and mature them into their style. It's a lot less effort for the teacher, since the student already has 'got' what it takes" it just needs to be less sloppy. And the relationship makes both of them look good.

      As a former boxer, age four til almost age forty when I retired, boxing is a sport for striking w/wrapped & gloved hands and wrists. Boxing isn't a bareknuckle fighting art in it's modern method. To make Western boxing adapt to bareknuckle fighting requires modification which we take from Okinawan Ryu and from old school Pugilism.

    It's very interesting to see this. Can we consider this the moment when Mui Fa was introduced into Kwong Wing Lam's school? Taking into account that we do not have videos of Sifu Kwong Wing Lam executing the Mui Fa form, unless I am mistaken, Sifu Lam's Hung Gar system starts directly with Lau Gar and moves on to other forms. Isn't that it?

    A nice series of 3 videos, Sifu Onassis. I've been doing a lot more Tui Shou practice the last year or so, although need to do much more. I've mainly been practising various "drills" or "patterns" in fixed step (Mainly Yang style and variants, plus some Wu and Chen style patterns of PLJA), as well as some free stepping without patterns and the San Shou two person training set. There is so much to this, but you've done a great job here in emphasising some basics and some of the body mechanics involved. My teachers are always emphasising keeping it soft to develop the "listening skills" and not to worry about getting pushed back or out by partners. Once the partners "tune in" to the drill, it can then be varied a bit in terms of pressure and speed and see how the skills develop. Then, after much more practice, we start detecting and sometimes testing weaknesses in the connection. Eventually, the transitions from one drill to another happen at the slightest detected change and it gets very interesting as it then becomes more free. It's a lot of fun, burns the legs like a forest fire, and gets the waist turning with the arms working a bit like fenders on a car - catching, sticking, deflecting, pushing, bumping etc. according to what the partner does. It's always a strange one teaching it to people from other styles, as it can end up being a hybrid rather than letting go of old ways to learn new ways. Later, once really internalised and automatic, it will develop naturally to suit the person. It's a fantastically rich part of Tai Chi training, I just wish I could find more partners to practise with and spend more time with my teachers to learn from them - which is about twice a year, not very much, but better than nothing. The underarm neutralising can work, but you're right about the risk of being trapped. However, a really good player is hard to trap, because they're always yielding and attacking at the same time - which is really tricky to deal with.
