In this video I intended to go over most of the Signature moves (ideas) we find in the Sun Form. It was near the end of the day however and I just ran out of time. Too bad!

Hung Gar Application Learning Start Easy

People ask me all the time about how to apply Hung Gar and Kung Fu in general. Here is a basic lesson and example of how I would begin to teach those skills. Granted, my student (Matt) in this example, does also have experience with me in Tai Chi.

For past History and remembrance...A Demo from Long ago now. Not perfect but the intent is there in some of the strikes. It's all about coordination and timing. It's short but deceptively challenging. Wow...the Trust we have for eachother...it's scary too. haha.
KunLun Mountain Straight Sword Demo

This quick sword Demo I did at the Dragon's Egg Studio. The sword I'm using is not wimpy...it does not bend unless you have the perfect energy. "Kunlun is a mystic mountain in China, renown for its lethal sword masters. This set reveals to you the rare “Jan Ghim” style of sword play. Unlike most flowing sword styles (known as “Hung Ghim” - different than Hung Gar) Jan Ghim develops forceful thr...

Got here from the Fight Commentary interview. Love these videos as I never completed my Hung Gar training. Thanks!
You can really see the Hsing I, Pa Kua in this Sun Set 🤗 Thanks Parungao Sifu 😬
Thank you, beautiful demo. Great teaching. I found it helpful. I practice Yang and Chen mostly, but I have some Sun style in my Yang 42. Great applications Sir.
Sun style always look so bizarre compared to other Taiji fist. Nice to see the clarity and logic behind the movements, and that the important stuff is still the same.
This could work on much weaker oponents or woman
It's nice and rare to see a demonstration of Sun taiji. Yours is very good! I too have been practicing the Sun style for years in Italy. My master learned from Wing Lam. Have you also learned from master Wing Lam?
I use to do the whole form but time out for hip operation and bad memory, only back to the first half, but I watch your videos and get a lot from them.
Good to see you teaching on video.
Is this how you would normally practice or is it faster for the demo?
I demo at a faster pace, usually...I believe in brevity when it comes to full forms.
Your background in combat sports makes you the most interesting martial arts instructor on youtube. No lie. So many people move from TMA/CMA to MMA and other combat sports, but you're one of the very few to go the other way.
It's not that strange. All you need is an actually good teacher! Besides, most people beat themselves up doing MMA and retire to TMA when their body can't handle it anymore. People only drop TMA when they have a bad teacher, or they don't get enough live practice, or the environment is too laidback or the ruleset too restrictive. It's also pretty normal for a teacher to take a successful practitioner of "dumb" martial arts and mature them into their style. It's a lot less effort for the teacher, since the student already has 'got' what it takes" it just needs to be less sloppy. And the relationship makes both of them look good.
We need to see content showing your Ji Lik tendon strengthening excercises for Hung Gar.
Fu Hok...Beautiful!!!
I can't believe you start posting again! For me, this is more relevant thank you may think. Btw, in the last 10 years, I have exchanged with you a couple emails about having Hung Gar lessons via Skype. You deny in both occasions, lol. Maybe I'll start asking you again 🤪. But seriously, thanks for coming back with your videos.
I'm sorry I don't mean to deny... I'm am just in a tough part of my life right now. Basically Im taking care of my parents and it's allot of work. But people like you inspire me to get something going. I actually get asked often if I teach for example on zoom. That is something I'll have to explore. When I am ready I will make an announcement. Thanks
@@OnassisParungao don't worries, Sifu. Wishing you the best and the best for your parents. One day it's gonna be possible, and I'm gonna be your student.
This is cringe bro. This is not effective striking. Learn boxing.
As a former boxer, age four til almost age forty when I retired, boxing is a sport for striking w/wrapped & gloved hands and wrists. Boxing isn't a bareknuckle fighting art in it's modern method. To make Western boxing adapt to bareknuckle fighting requires modification which we take from Okinawan Ryu and from old school Pugilism.
Onassis!! The algorithm must be psychic dude, I was just thinking about you during my morning workout! I was thinking about putting a wooden dummy in my back yard gym and of course it made me think of you, blessings to you and yours brother!
Aloha Sifu. Greetings from Hawai’i. I hope the parents are doing well. Looking forward to you coming out to Hawai’i for a gathering of minds. I’d like to set up a seminar for you. Let’s talk soon
Nice to see some hung Kuen good solid moves great to see skills preserved.
Great stuff!
This is good stuff 🤗that’s why I choose Hung Gar Kuen 💕Thanks, Sifu 😬
Excellent, thank you!
Hello shifu ! How are you ! We started a conversion on your last video's comment section ; here's a recap of it
I like your content and I wish I could learn the combat applications but America is too far ... Is there an online program ?
OP : Hello Pierrewiliam, Having an online course of some kind is something I've been wanting to do but it's been kinda difficult to get started. I'm open to suggestions if you have a preferred platform that I might be able to research. Thanks for your support
Hello again shifu, After some days thinking about it (and, also, some weeks of adversity), I think that having online classes/coaching through zoom would be a great 1st step (as shuai jiao shifu Sonny Mannon does) ; the second logical step would be to release the most interesting sessions - if not all of them- or clips through members-only youtube videos (I let to you the business details - who should have Access to what, how many sessions, what Price etc.-) . I think such system would allow you to share your rare kung fu knowledge to the World ! Where I live, the philosophy of pressure testing martial arts is way too often thrown into Oblivion... Thanks in avance Have a nice day
Hi Pierre, thanks for the motivation. I'm going through a period of my life right now where I'm busy taking care of my parents. (Takes most of my free times. I would like to do something as you suggest but it's difficult for me to start. A student of mine suggested that I should get a website similar to what his massage therapist site does. Ie. Clients can go onto the calendar and book appointments.
@@OnassisParungao hi sir. I 100% understand that one may have moral/personal obligations to fulfill and if you manage to create such online training platform at the same Time, I can't but wish you to be as sucessful as you deserve
Nice to see some new stuff from you , keeping hung gar alive.
Ok hung ga power out here 👀 bravo it gets better !
Great stuff as usual
It would have been so cool to see more guys like this in NHB. Maybe Hapkido or silat or something along those line. Keith hackney was pretty tough.
Good stuff. I have wondered about push hands witching the Sun style. Very clever.
Great to see you back posting brother!

Nice MUG Fob!

Very cool!
Can you recommend any shifus in northern California? Thanks
This is what makes Gung Fu Great 🤗love the variation of three stars excercise, you presented 😬
cool! thanks so much for sharing. we practice same, same, but different! backside low, inside high, outside low.
You practice the same way we did back in my Hung Gar days: backside, inside, outside
It's very interesting to see this. Can we consider this the moment when Mui Fa was introduced into Kwong Wing Lam's school? Taking into account that we do not have videos of Sifu Kwong Wing Lam executing the Mui Fa form, unless I am mistaken, Sifu Lam's Hung Gar system starts directly with Lau Gar and moves on to other forms. Isn't that it?
Мы очень ВАС любим!!!!!! Пожалуйста снимайте еще Видео!!! Вы Великий МАСТЕР!!!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing some knowledge. I always appreciate you videos. Very good Sir. Jiayou!
You’re Right(as always) not Qi(Chi)! Just hard work, repetition, experience 😳😬I’ve learned a little of Wu style Tai Chi! Not enough to make a opinion 🤔Thanks again, Sifu 💕
Glad to see that you are still up and fu-ing! and of course, many thanks for sharing. : )
A nice series of 3 videos, Sifu Onassis. I've been doing a lot more Tui Shou practice the last year or so, although need to do much more. I've mainly been practising various "drills" or "patterns" in fixed step (Mainly Yang style and variants, plus some Wu and Chen style patterns of PLJA), as well as some free stepping without patterns and the San Shou two person training set. There is so much to this, but you've done a great job here in emphasising some basics and some of the body mechanics involved. My teachers are always emphasising keeping it soft to develop the "listening skills" and not to worry about getting pushed back or out by partners. Once the partners "tune in" to the drill, it can then be varied a bit in terms of pressure and speed and see how the skills develop. Then, after much more practice, we start detecting and sometimes testing weaknesses in the connection. Eventually, the transitions from one drill to another happen at the slightest detected change and it gets very interesting as it then becomes more free. It's a lot of fun, burns the legs like a forest fire, and gets the waist turning with the arms working a bit like fenders on a car - catching, sticking, deflecting, pushing, bumping etc. according to what the partner does. It's always a strange one teaching it to people from other styles, as it can end up being a hybrid rather than letting go of old ways to learn new ways. Later, once really internalised and automatic, it will develop naturally to suit the person. It's a fantastically rich part of Tai Chi training, I just wish I could find more partners to practise with and spend more time with my teachers to learn from them - which is about twice a year, not very much, but better than nothing. The underarm neutralising can work, but you're right about the risk of being trapped. However, a really good player is hard to trap, because they're always yielding and attacking at the same time - which is really tricky to deal with.
Very enlightened and instructive video as well! Always very useful information!! Also i would like to ask if you could explain to us in what way you use your dan tien, firsty i physically and thwn mentally?! For example you contract your lower abdomen the moment you apply the technic (the physical aspect as i mentioned before) alongside with a relaxed body?!
